If you think of yourself as funny, you become tragic.

minnie Gena Rowlands as Minnie Moore in Minnie and Moskowitz — this is really rough and probably not done. In this scene, she’s having a conversation with someone who just doesn’t get what’s she talking about. Politely accepting the pleasant distraction of a glass of wine, she bites her finger in a moment of anguish. Minnie and Moskowitz is full of bizarre little expressions like this. Too bad it’s so hard to track down on DVD. Maybe it’ll be remade into a really horrible rom-com, stripped of all subtlety and uniqueness. And Seymour will be incredibly handsome.

I want to draw Seymour, too. Minnie and Seymour don’t echo any sane fantasy of finding love, but if you’re going to root for the impulsive, convention-be-damned, against-all-odds, just-like-in-the-movies couple, go all out. I can’t think of a better met-questionable movie than Minnie and Moskowitz.

Since it was filmed in LA in the 1970s, the movie also has a lot of excellent signs and lettering, some of which I had to rewind to see again:

Picture 3

(It’s not shown in its entirety in any frame, but Seymour and Minnie drive past a House of Pies.)
